Abstract: This paper presents a numerical comparison between a rational LES model introduced by Galdi and Layton (2000) and a classical LES model. The new LES model is based on a rational approximation of the Fourier transform of the Gaussian filter while the classical LES model uses a Taylor polynomial approximation. The numerical experiments for the 2D driven cavity test problem show a clear improvement in solution quality for the rational LES model. This improvement is consistent with the new closure approximation which provides better attenuation of high frequencies.
