FMA Cinema: "The Discrete Charm of Geometry"

The Department of Mathematics shows the movie "The Discrete Charme of Geometry"
on May 21, 2016 - 18.15h at the lecture hall building 22A.

The Department of Mathematics proudly shows the new oeuvre of Ekaterina Eremenko in the scope of the Langen Nacht der Wissentschaft. What do mathematicians do? Ekaterina Eremenko, experienced film maker from Berlin ("Colors of Math") gives a glimpse in her newest documentary: she accompanied a team of mathematicians for one year. The result: a unique and unprecedented dive into the unknown world of mathematicians.

A team of mathematicians is working together on a big project. Excitement of discovery, hope and disappointment, competition and recognition are shown from an infinitely close distance. Scientists united by the idea of discretization, which, in short, means: constructing continuous objects from basic building blocks. Akin to the scientists’ search for the right discretization of continuum, this film itself is composed of fragments - individual characters of different ages, temperaments and scientific approaches - which form a single continuous melody. The question of where the boundaries lie between mathematics and the lives of those who are involved in it and how much they are willing to sacrifice is as important as the search for precise scientific answers.

Ekaterina Eremenko is graduated mathematician and graduated film director. She currently works in the Sonderforschungsbereich "Discretization in Geometry and Dynamics" in Berlin. Her film "Colors of Math" was a success at the Magdeburger Mathenachtstraum 2014. Also her newest movie targets a broad audience and has been shown successfully on several film festivals.
