Prof. Dr. Dietmar Kröner

The beginnings of research on conservation laws in Germany go back to Euler and Riemann and reached a certain peak in Göttingen with Courant , Friedrichs and Lewy. In 1933 Courant was compulsorily retired and three years later founded the famous Courant Institute in New York. Thus, essential know-how in the field of conservation laws was no longer available in Germany. With the discovery of the Godunov, the Glimm method and the van Leer limiter, an intensive international research on conservation laws started between 1960 and 1970 with many publications, partly by former PhD students from the Courant Institute. With the DMV seminar initiated by Willi Jäger in Schloss Thurnau in 1985 with the invited speakers Dafermos and Osher, intensive research on conservation laws started again in Germany, which found its continuation in many workshops in Oberwolfach and Hirschegg and the three major international conferences Hyp I, Hyp II and Hyp III in Aachen and Magdeburg in 1988, 2000, and 2016, respectively. Two DFG priority programs and a DFG research group then put this development on a broad foundation.
