Character theory of finite groups has a long a successful history dating back to the seminal work of Frobenius and Schur. In this talk, I will survey the classical theory and give an overview - starting from basic examples and application - over the character theory of infinite groups. Unlike the corresponding theory for finite groups, this theory has an interesting interplay with ergodic theory, operator algebras and various natural rigidity properties, such as Margulis super rigidity.
