In cooperation with the faculties of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Process- and Systems Engineering.

The choice of one of the fields of study is made at the beginning of the second year of studies, but due to a high proportion of general engineering subjects, it can still be changed up to the beginning of the third year without much additional effort.

Study objective: The Bachelor's degree programme in Mathematical Engineering is interdisciplinary and research-oriented. Students acquire equally well-founded knowledge in both an engineering science and mathematics. Two modelling modules are a special feature of the new degree programme and train the ability to work in an interdisciplinary manner in a special way. Skills in programming and the use of mathematical-technical software are also taught, but are not the main focus of the study programme. Graduates are both engineers and mathematicians.
Degree: Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.)
Standard period of study: 7 semesters
Start of studies: Winter semester
Entry requirements: Higher education entrance qualification (e. g. Abitur) or relevant subject-specific higher education entrance qualification
Application: Without admission restriction
Application deadline: 15. September (for applicants with a German school leaving certificate, Application to the University of Magdeburg)
15. July (for applicants with an international school-leaving certificate, application via uni-assist)
Career fields / subsequent master programs: The degree qualifies for direct entry into a profession. Mathematical engineers can be employed, for example, in the development departments in the following branches of industry:​
  • Electronics
  • Car manufacturing and suppliers
  • Communication and security technology
  • Plant and apparatus engineering
  • Foodstuffs and luxury foodstuffs
In addition, the degree enables students to take up a Master's degree in mathematics and, depending on the specialisation, in an engineering science.

Courses of study

  • Electrical engineering and information technology play an important role in many industrial and service sectors: in classical electrical engineering, energy technology and electronics as well as in automotive engineering, railway technology, medical technology and the IT and telecommunications sector.

  • Mechanical engineering deals with the design and manufacture of vehicles, machines, apparatus and plants, with material flow technology as well as the development, processing and testing of new types of materials.

  • Process engineering deals with the development and realisation of ecologically compatible material conversion processes, which produce valuable products from raw materials with the help of physical, biological or chemical effects. For example, fine chemicals are turned into pharmaceuticals, petroleum into functional plastics, rock into building materials and glasses, ore into metals, waste into recyclates and energy, sand into silicon chips, and agricultural raw materials into foodstuffs and luxury foodstuffs.
